Achieving Balance: the 4 Aspects of Being

Achieving a balance in the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of your life leads to improved health and well-being. The following are some suggestions that may help to achieve balance in all aspects. This is true of both survivors and supporters.

Physical

  • eat regular, nutritional meals
  • limit junk foods, caffeine, sugar
  • get some form of exercise daily
  • get sufficient sleep
  • get regular physical check-ups
  • pay attention to the kind and amount of medication that you take
  • explore alternate types of healing
  • Listen to your body

Mental

  • Open yourself to new thoughts, perspectives and ideas
  • read many different types of materials
  • attend workshops and classes to learn new things
  • nurture your curiousity and creativity

Emotional

  • foster a postive attitude toward life, I can versus I can’t
  • build a good support network
  • evaluate self-perceptions, personal vision of self, others, world
  • identify your emotional and behavioral patterns
  • build fulfilling, healthy friendships

Spiritual

  • evaluate your spiritual beliefs
  • join a specific spiritual community – church, synagogue, mosque circle et cetera
  • explore and enhance your relationship with the creator
  • broaden your understanding of spirituality
  • get in touch with things that nurture your spirituality – nature, discussion with others, reading inspirational works, daily mediation or prayer
  • reflect on your spirituality – how has it changed and how does it reflect daily life?
