Here is a great story of learning to take your power back and defend it too. I learned about it from my friend Erin Weed from Girls Fight Back.

An important part of healing and living a joyful life is being empowered.  To be empowered you learn to stand up for yourself, to fight to protect yourself and your family and you find your voice.  I’m learning about Shotokan Karate as I write Hawk Dances,

The principles include humility, respect, compassion, patience, and both an inward and outward calmness. The Dojo kun lists five philosophical rules for training in the dojo; seek perfection of character, be faithful, endeavor to excel, respect others, refrain from violent behavior.  (from Wiki)   So it’s not about becoming violent or literally “slapping people upside the head” as I referred to in my post about Mackenzie, it’s about being able to protect yourself when and if the time is needed.

I’ve been to Kenya and visited Nairobi and the fact that these elderly women are being trained gives my heart peace.
